Central Virginia is a history buff's paradise, thanks to the numerous figures who made their homes here—Thomas Jefferson's and James Monroe's, both near Charlottesville, can be toured—and Civil War battles fought in the area, including Appomattox, Fredericksburg, and Lynchburg. Colonial Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown together make up the Historic Triangle and offer reenactments and living history. The western part of Virginia is blanketed with the majestic Appalachian Mountains and several wilderness regions, including the Shenandoah National Park, that allow for canoeing, camping, horseback riding, hiking, fishing, and mountain biking. A collapsed limestone cave created a 215-foot arch now known as Natural Bridge, below which the caverns can still be toured. The eastern coast borders the Chesapeake Bay and boasts the famous resort town of Virginia Beach.
