Open since 1976 the tropical Manaus zoological gardens consist of a menagerie of approximately 100 native species of the Amazonian fauna housed in a green area of more than 20000 square meters in the hotel grounds. Specimens include mammals birds and reptiles with emphasis being given to the jaguars the only big cats and the biggest felines of the Americas and the Capivara the largest living rodent of the world. The original menagerie of the tropical Manaus zoo was composed of donations made by fellow citizens of Manaus or by the Ibama -Instituto Brasileiro do meio ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renovaveis- the brazilian institute for the environment and the renewable natural resources where the zoo is dully registered and also authorized to develop captive programs and to maintain captive born individuals of endangered native species.
