Most of St. Lucia is rural and made up of small fishing communities but in recent years there has been a wave of resort developments. Reduit Beach is a popular resort area and is home to a small fishing community as well. An artificial channel cuts between the two areas, opening to a big lagoon that's the site of Rodney Bay Marina. Marigot Bay is a beautiful sheltered bay that's backed by green hillsides and has a little palm-fringed beach. Castries is the islands capital and the commercial center. This small port city’s liveliest area is in the south at Castries Market. Here you can find scores of produce and handicraft stalls. St. Lucian Jazz Festival is the island's biggest musical event held in mid-May every year.
