Comments: 2/9/2004 - If you've seen the movie "Breakfast At Tiffany's," you'll recall Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) lived in a NYC walkup apartment converted from a city townhouse. Whenever I think of 1871 House, I'm reminded of the winding staircase in the movie with apartments on every floor. At one time in its storied past, 1871 House served the same purpose, except now its former apartments are elegant rooms at a quiet and cozy inn. It's very romantic for couples and quiet and secure for singles and families. In one of the nicer neighborhoods in the city, the 1871 House is convenient to all sorts of amenities, the bus & subway, shops & businesses, even Bloomingdale's, are all are a short walk away. Within one block are several restaurants and grocery stores, some of which are open 24 hours. For the best bagels, try The Bread Factory in the same block on Lexington. Traveling alone, I always felt safe, even when out walking at night. For me, staying at 1871 House is SO much better than a city hotel, no matter how upscale. You feel like you live in the city, not just passing through. The prices are competitive with 3 and 4 star hotels in NYC. I stayed at one of those "posh" hotels on Central Park South. The room was nice but so small I could barely turn around. I also stayed at a nationwide chain hotel in NYC and was unpleasantly surprised at how poorly kept the facilities were. From what I've seen in "Sex and the City," the room decor at the 1871 House rivals those in the Stanhope Fifth Avenue. True, there's no room service at the 1871 House, but then, if the city loses power, you don't have to climb 22 stories to get to your room! The innkeepers, Warren & Lia Raum, are friendly & helpful without being intrusive. I can't imagine staying anywhere else when I visit New York. For a "Home away from Home" experience, or, if your home's like mine, a MUCH NICER Home away from Home, visit the 1871 House and stay a while! A guest from Alexandria, Virginia, USA |

Comments: 11/21/2002 - Our first choice for accommodations wherever we travel is to stay at abed & breakfast. We prefer the style and intimacy of a home as opposed to a hotel. I chose 1871 House because of the superior detail & photos offered on its web site reflecting its character which met & exceeded all of our expectations. Ideally, we wanted to live in a stylish, well maintained, well decorated brownstone on the East side, with friendly proprietors. We wanted to feel like we really lived in NYC. From the access to great shopping, Central Park, museums, to the convenience of getting breakfast at the corner grocery at 10 PM for the next morning with the additional benefit of smelling all of those wonderful flowers at the adjoining flower market steps away from our front door, it all provided for completely wonderful experience. But it all would not be complete without the kindness & friendship offered by the Raum's & their two lovely children. We cannot wait for our next trip to New York next spring to our brownstone apartment at 1871 House.

Comments: 11/02/2002 - Dear Lia, and Warren, I wish to tell you, in my opinion the opportunity presented by 1871House to enjoy New York City, is so unique, so representative of Upper East Side culture, I realize it is largely responsible for making my week's trip to New York in October as enjoyable as it was. To wake up in those marvelous white cotton sheets under my fluffy down comforter, next to my large window with a view to the quiet side of 62nd Street, was just the start I needed to every adventurous day I experienced while there! After a large breakfast, I was off!!! At the end of my daily sojourn, happily weary and hungry, I'd warm up whatever tasty preparation I'd picked up at the epicurean deli-supermarket around the corner, warm it up, have dinner in my kitchen with a bird's eye view of 62nd Street. Then I'd retire to my large welcoming couch, snuggled in, safe and entertained in my lovely suite by NY television until my eyes drooped, signaling it was time to go to bed and start the whole process over again the next morning! I'll be back and I'll tell many what lovely entertaining surroundings await anyone who stays with you. I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank you for the kind consideration and helpful advice offered to me about anything I needed to know. I am still a neophyte when it comes to New York, and your time and knowledge further enhanced my stay. My memories of New York are such that I will come again and I'll certainly want to stay at 187l House!

Comments: 09/28/2002 - Last night I booked a reservation at the 1871 House. I was very excited to find one of the rooms I liked (The Great Room) was available. Our son called me today, after dropping by the 1871 House, and from his report I'm even more excited about the opportunity to stay there. I just want to share his impressions with you. Our son works about two blocks from the 1871 House. He'd already told me the location was superb and as he was in Manhattan today, he decided to walk by and see the 1871 House. He phoned me a while ago saying he not only walked by, but actually was able to see the room we have reserved. He was so impressed with everything about it. He said it is a beautiful place in a terrific location. He went on to say if he could pick the perfect place to recommend to visitors, the 1871 House would be it. In fact, he said he plans to let anyone who might be coming to New York to see him know about it and encourage them to try to stay there.
Sincerely, SL

Comments: 05/11/2002 - Lia, I didn't get a chance to thank you before we left last weekend. I want to let you know that we had a wonderful time in the city, and staying at your house was a highlight. The location was great and the rooms were beautiful, and everything was incredibly clean. With the kids, it was also nice to have the kitchen available for breakfast stuff, so we didn't have to eat out all the time. Basically, I just wanted to say thank you.

Comments: 03/25/2002 - Dear Lia: Just a short note to tell you how much we enjoyed our stay at 1871 House. My daughters and I loved returning each evening to our "home" on the Upper East side. It was so comforting to be able to fix a cup of tea or have some New York cheesecake from our own frig. The beds were luscious as was the peace and quiet. I have told all my friends what a great time we had and how reasonable your rates are. I know my family will be returning for a visit as well.

Comments: 07/23/2001 - Hi Lia and Warren, John and I just wanted to thank you for the lovely accommodations! We had a great time and have been spreading the news about the place. Friends of ours were in NYC at the same time & stopped in to see the room we were raving about. They all loved it! I am forwarding your website to all of them because they want to reserve a room in your brownstone next time they are in the city. They were depressed when they left because they had to go back to their disgusting hotel. I have never slept so well in my life, my husband & I both agree that that is the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in.
Thanks again for everything! L&J
