Noto, Sicily, is located in the province of Siracusa and is one of the best spots in the world to find detailed Baroque architecture with its ornate balconies and facades. In 1693, Noto was almost completely destroyed by an earthquake and the new town was sympathetically rebuilt to retain its charm. Some of the more impressive limestone structures in Noto include the Duomo cathedral, the Palazzo Ducezio, the Palazzo Nicolaci, and the Chiesa di San Carlo. Each May, Noto looks particularly stunning when it celebrates the Infiorata, a festive time when colorful flower petals are used to create pictures and patterns covering the town's streets, squares, and courtyards. Nature lovers will want to make the short trip to nearby Cava Grande, where limestone cliffs look out over a magnificent gorge. A half-hour's walk takes you down to the river below, past refreshing rock pools and the Grotta dei Briganti cave.
