Martinique is a slice of France set in the tropics. However, you will recognize that Martinicans have a culture of their own. The locals are solidly based on West Indian Creole traditions; you will notice this when you hear the Zouk music pouring out of radios, bars and nightclubs. The area celebrates a spirited Mardi Gras Carnival during the five-day period leading up to Ash Wednesday each February and March. There are two major sporting events: Tour de la Martinique, a week-long bicycle race held in mid-July and the Tour des Yoles Rondes, a week-long race of traditional sailboats held in early August.
