Monemvassia or Monemvasia or Malvasy is a medieval fortress with an adjacent town, located in the south east coast of the Peloponnese in the Greek prefecture of Laconia. Nowadays, the fortress has become a world wide visit attraction in which visitors have the opportunity to see its defensive structures, the small adjacent town and many Byzantine churches.
The founding of the fortress of Monemvasia occured in the 6th Century AD, when people from the close by villages were seeeking refuge from the Slavic invasion of Greece.
Monemvasia was an important Byzantine town throughout the time of the Empire, until the 14th Century when the Empire fell. It was successively ruled by Venetians and Ottomans. In recent times, Monemvasia is a thriving community with ever increasing level of tourists.
The residents of the complex can enjoy the spectacular view at the top of the Monemvasia Castle. It takes about 45 mins to reach to the top but the sea and country view is worth the effort. The beaches close to the complex are ideal for watersports and windsurfing.
