Much of this lovely city was destroyed in 1755 from an overpowering earthquake, followed by an equally devastating tsunami that killed over 60,000 people. History has it that Lisbon*s Pombal Marquis set straight to work following the disaster, saying; Bury the dead and feed the living, and in an amazingly short time had Lisbon back on its feet. The surviving buildings that pre-date this disaster are living monuments to the resilience of the Portuguese spirit.
