Though the 35 islands and 83 atolls of French Polynesia span across 3,125,497 square miles in the Pacific Ocean, their land area amounts to just 2,201 square miles. The island of Tahiti is the largest in French Polynesia, offering a traditional market, museums, historic sites, temple ruins, and of course gorgeous waterfalls and cliffs. A ferry ride away is Moorea, home to spectacular beaches and reefs. Wildlife lovers will enjoy the dolphin encounters there as well as the manta ray viewings and shark feedings on Rangiroa and Bora Bora. The Society Islands are famous for their great sailing conditions, so Raiatea is the headquarters of many of French Polynesia's yachts.
