El Salvador’s capital, San Salvador, lies in a valley at the foot of a volcano. The city is filled with loads of traffic and the five markets in town sell just about anything. La Libertad is the closest town to the capital and ideal for surfers as some of the Pacific’s best waves roll out here. Montecristo Cloud Forest is a great spectacle where one can see some rare and protected wildlife. The Mayan ruins of Tazumal are considered the most important and located in Chalchuapa. This is a great opportunity to view the best preserved Mayan ruin and catch up on some ancient history. Cerro Verde national park is home to the steaming Volcán Izalco and the blue volcanic crater lake Lago de Coatepeque.
