The town of Luperon is located in the northern coast of the Dominican Republic, in the province of Puerto Plata. Residencial Marina Luperon, the apartment complex's name sake is only two blocks from the beach and a 15 minutes walk to "downtown".
From the apartment's balcony you have a clear view of the ocean and the entrance to Luperon Harbor, probably the safest hurricane hole in the Caribbean. Views of the mountains nearby also enchant the eye. The apartment is set in a quiet environment, but close to the "action": Puerto Blanco Marina and the Luperon Yacht Club are both only a short walk away. Many activities are featured there, sponsored by the local ex-pat and boater's community. There are also a number of restaurants in the area. Anything from the typical "pica pollo", (the Dominican version of Kentucky Fried Chicken) to gourmet meals
About ½ hour West of Luperon lyes the town of Castillo. There, in 1494, Christopher Columbus and 1500 of his followers established the first European town in the Americas. The town included a storehouse, several stone buildings, a church and a plaza. The colony was abandoned in 1498 and vestiges of still remain and can be visited. There is also a replica of the original church and a Taino, (native residents of Hispaniola) museum, probably the best in the country. Archaeological 'digs' continue, both at Taino sites and underwater, where a Columbus anchor was discovered last year.
Puerto Plata, to the East, is only an hour away. A vibrant Dominican city of 200,000 boasting historic architecture and a great nightlife. The newly opened Sea World, at the entrance of the city, offers several night clubs, restaurants and a casino. Other points of interest are the Malecon, the cable car ride to the summit of Mount Isabela de Torres and the Museo Ambar displaying many pieces of the hardened, half clear sap. Amber from the Dominican Republic is renowned for the diversity of inclusions, (insects trapped in the sap) millions of years ago.
Further East, Sosua, Cabarete, Rio San Juan, and Samana and whale watching. Then, Las Terrenas, Las Galeras, etc. All interesting and unique. To the South, Santiago, the financial capital of the Cibao Valley, the richest agricultural area in the country. Inland, 2 hours away, mountain valleys to compare with the best of the Alps. The highest, Pico Duarte, is 10200', a three day mule trek from the roads-end. From Jarabacoa, a delightful village nestled in the mountains one can go white water rafting, head for Pico Duarte, or drive over another range to the Constanza valley, huge and intensely cultivated . And not to miss Santo Domingo with it's precious Zona Colonial, (Colonial City). Visit the hemisphere's first cathedral, fortress, university, monastery and nunnery. Want more? La Romana playground to local and world's "rich and famous". Then Bavaro and Punta Cana. Resort after resort over white beaches and clear blue water and.....on and on, and on. This country, set in 3/4 of the eastern portion of the island of Hispanola, has been blessed with endless beautiful and varied places. Definitely an invitation for us to explore.
Transportation in the DR is readily available. You can hire a taxi or take a tour or ride the "guaguas" (buses or vans). They interlace the entire country and are cheap. Dominican people, for the most part, are very courteous and helpful. It helps if you know a little Spanish, even enough to communicate the essentials, since the Dominican population, at large, do not speak English. Se habla Espanol........
Soooo, pack your bags and get ready for color and adventure. Come soon to this Caribbean playground. We're waiting for you!!
